Stony Hollow Landfill Meeting
The City of Moraine is hosting a community meeting to discuss the failures at the Stony Hollow Landfill which has resulted in hundreds of citizens complaints being filed with the City. The meeting is being held on Monday, June 19th, from 6-8 p.m. at the Moraine Municipal Building, 4200 Dryden Road, and Moraine OH 45439.
After increased odor complaints in 2016, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) issued preliminary orders in 2016 that required the property’s operator, Waste Management, to address the problem. Ohio EPA Director Butler issued his “Findings and Orders” on May 3rd, 2017. Due to Moraine citizens having been negatively impacted by the failures at the landfill, the City has continued to monitor developments at the site.
At the community meeting, the City will also have its environmental attorney and law director on hand to explain the O.E.P.A. process that has been utilized so far, what actions the City has taken in response, and answer questions from the public. City Staff and members of Council will also be in attendance. The City will ask its environmental attorney and legal experts to:
- Review the Ohio EPA’s Findings and Orders
- Review Ohio EPA process
- Update residents about what is happening at the Stony Hollow Landfill
- Discuss further actions being undertaken by the City in response to the Findings and Orders
“We want to provide an opportunity for citizens and business owners to get a better understanding of what has happened at the landfill , and provide an opportunity for citizens to get answers to some of their questions ,” said City Manager David Hicks. “We do not have all of the answers, but the public should be assured their concerns are not being ignored.”
Officials from the Ohio EPA, the Regional Air Pollution Control Authority (RAPCA), and Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County have been invited to attend, as well as representatives from Waste Management. Each has been offered the opportunity to be included on the agenda.
